Bonfire evening – good bye Winter

Today is Valborgsmässoafton in Sweden. It’s a feast dedicated to Spring. Tonight there will be bonfires in every little village, choirs singing and maybe some fireworks even. According to ancient beliefs the fires are supposed to frighten all witches, so they leave the neighbourhoods on their broomsticks and gather in the witches’ place Blåkulla.

The whole thing is a mix of Catholicism, ancient rites and youth party. The Nordic Museum has a good article on the subject.

We’re having dinner tonight with my mom and dad and later we’re going to see a bonfire arranged by the local sports association.

The picture is from last year.
